Purpose
Roof completes the building model. It may contain gable, hip, link, or a single-plane raking/mono-pitch section, and each section is roofed independently.
What ICF Designer Has Already Done
- Detected roof sections from your wall types and pitch, set in Elevations.
- Solved each section's roof geometry β gable (an exact construction when a section has two opposite gable ends), hip (a real straight-skeleton solve), or one raking plane when the connected mono-wall endpoint heights all describe the same plane.
- For complex (L/T-shaped) footprints, split the building into rectangular masses at the reflex corners and roofed each independently β how such roofs are actually built.
- Calculated plan and pitched-roof area, ridge height, and fascia length per section.
What Decisions Are Still Yours / Why It Matters
Confirm each section's structure (trusses, rafters, or by others/engineer), covering, and eave overhang, then save.
The detected form and pitch come from the walls set in Elevations. If a section looks wrong, check its gable settings or the start/end heights and direction of every connected mono wall.
What To Check
- That the detected sections match what you expect β a gable wall with no matching opposite gable wall in the same section will roof as hip, not gable.
- For a mono-pitch roof, confirm one plane is shown with no ridge, hips, or valleys, and that the displayed roof rise matches the lowest-to-highest wall-top difference.
- The overhang and structure choices, which drive the covering and fascia quantities.
- That covering type suits the roof pitch (steep-enough for the chosen material).
Practical Construction Notes
- A section only becomes a gable roof when it has exactly two OPPOSITE gable-flagged eave walls (matching pitch); one gable end with a hip-classified far end still roofs as hip.
- A mono-pitch roof is accepted only when adjacent wall endpoints agree and every wall top fits one plane; inconsistent corner heights fall back safely instead of inventing a raking surface.
- Pitched (roof) area is always more than plan area β covering and quantities use pitched area.
- Complex footprints are split into rectangular sections at internal (reflex) corners; the seam between two sections is a valley or hip, not a separate wall.
- Roof quantities are design estimates for pricing β confirm structure counts and covering with a truss manufacturer/supplier before ordering.
